Week 3 - Assignment 3:
UDL is an approach that helps teachers design their lessons in a way that can meet the needs of each diverse learner. Since every class is diverse somehow it is important that we create a curriculum that accommodates all learners. UDL helps our curriculum to be flexible so that all of our lessons work for each student. It is important that a teacher knows her goals, and then based on the goals she needs to look at what the barriers are that make it difficult to reach her goals. One way that the teacher can design her lesson so that she can reach her goals for her students is by giving them choices. Every child enjoys different things and gets engaged from different types of activities, therefore it is important to give the students the option of how they want to complete the specific task.
The lesson on the life cycle of butterflies is a perfect example of a lesson that includes UDL. The lesson involved a lot of class discussion and student engagement which makes each child feel like their opinion counts. The teacher also uses a lot of visual aids to help students have a clear idea of how the life cycle of a butterfly works. The learning centers are also another way where each child get a chance to do a different activity that may appeal to them. Students have the option of working alone or in pairs which gives them the choice of what they would rather based on how they prefer to work. The teacher also makes sure to assess her students understanding at the end of the lesson. This way she knows if her lesson accommodated all of her students just like a UDL lesson is supposed to.
