Week 2: Assignment 2

Diversity in the classroom is a topic that is discussed many times. However actually using all of the skills taught by promoting a classroom where students learn from each other differences is not a simple feat. It is important that teachers of diverse classrooms realize two things, firstly they must know the effects that diversity has in their classroom, and secondly should conduct their lessons in a way that makes their students inclusive and accepting of one another.

Diversity affects a classroom in many ways. Students can feel different from their peers for many different reasons whether it's their background, religion, gender, or academic level. These differences can cause some students to feel inadequate as if they do not belong. All of these effects are things that a teacher should take into account before entering her diverse classroom so that she can plan in advance how to avoid these challenges and make her classroom as inviting and inclusive as possible.

One strategy that a teacher may choose to use to make her class more inclusive is to have open discussions about diversity. The teacher can give projects on where the students parents and grandparents are originally from, and based on that can show the class that we are all different and our differences add to the class in a positive way. The teacher should also design her lessons to meet the needs of her diverse learners by having the students work in groups, creating learning centers, and using technology to help support her instruction.

  2. Tova, I like the idea of conducting open-end discussions about diversity. It's important for students to be able to talk about their differences so the can learn to acccept one another.
